SE Seattle: Othello Safeway Slated for Facelift
Good news for the Rainier Valley! On July 17th, I participated in a press conference where Safeway announced its Othello location will be the recipient of a $3 million upgrade. The announcement of Safeway’s plans, coupled with Link Light Rail and a 420,000 square foot mixed use development kitty-corner from Safeway (which is currently vacant and unused) are positive signs that the area is being revitalized, diverse and creating jobs.
Built in 1954, the store is overdue for improvement. The project is slated to begin in January 2010 and completed by April or May of the same year. Among the improvements will be the addition of a bakery and floral departments, with the expansion of other departments and an update of the produce department. The exterior of the building will get new paint and signs along with the addition of a seating area and outdoor produce.
I am happy I was able to help this project become a reality and I commend Safeway for their willingness to help revitalize this community. This could not have been done without the tireless advocacy of Othello Neighborhood Association President Jenna Walden and community activists such as Ray Akers and others in SE Seattle. Thanks to them and all the other people who worked to make this project happen.
